About Cooke’s Studios

Cooke’s Studios is a media and arts centre in the heart of Barrow-in-Furness. The Grade II listed Victorian building runs over 5 floors and houses many of the town’s key creative organisations, providing a range of high quality digital media, theatre and dance participation opportunities to local residents.

It opened in 2011 following a £2 million refurbishment funded by the Community Assets Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and Working Neighbourhoods Fund. The building is managed by not-for-profit company Creative Studios Cumbria in partnership with Barrow Borough Council.

In 2021 Cooke’s Studios expanded into the partially-refurbished building next door at 102 Abbey Road and officially launched the new ground floor exhibition space, first floor workshop and new studio spaces that November for the launch of Signal Film & Media’s Arts Council England-funded project West Coast Photo Festival.

The redevelopment of Cooke’s Studios continues in 2022 with a new £490,000 grant from Arts Council England to transform Cooke’s Studios into a flagship accessible public centre for participatory arts. This project is generously supported through the Arts Council England Capital Development Fund and Sir John Fisher Foundation.

The vision for Cooke’s Studios is: A cultural community, where talent is nurtured and people thrive.
